| Descr: | The IRT was created to build a subway system in Manhattan. It acquired control of the Manhattan Railway elevated system in 1903 and the first IRT subway line opened in 1904. During the 1910s and 1920s lines were built into Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. The system was taken over by the City of New York in 1940.
