Car History by Frank Hicks

Chicago Surface Lines 4021
This car is the only surviving Chicago prewar PCC. It was part of only the third order for production PCC's but was nonstandard because it was longer and wider than typical PCC's, had three sets of doors instead of two, and was designed for two-man operation. The 83 prewar PCC's mostly ran on Madison Street in Chicago until the early 1950's, when they were all rebuilt for one-man operation and transferred to the Cottage Grove line. They were retired in 1956 but 4021 was retained by CTA in its historic streetcar collection, stored at the Lincoln carbarn. In 1985 most of the CTA historic collection was donated to IRM, and 4021 was moved to Union, repainted in its as-built color scheme and put on static display.
