Car History by Frank Hicks

San Francisco Municipal Railway 1060
One of a number of PCC streetcars still in active revenue service in the U.S. is this car, SFMR 1060. The acronym PCC refers to the Electric Railway Presidents Conference Committee, a group of street railway company representatives that in the early 1930's developed a design for a modern, standardized streetcar. The resulting PCC car was extremely successful and several thousand PCC's were built by two companies between 1936 and 1952. Philadelphia, the city for which 1060 was originally built, was one of the larger operators of PCC's and owned 570 at one point or another. This car was part of an order of 100 cars numbered 2701-2800 which made up Philadelphia's first order for postwar PCC's; built as two-man cars, they were later converted to one-man operation. Originally assigned to the Chestnut Hill and Chestnut Street routes, the 2700's eventually saw service all over the steadily shrinking Philadelphia city system. Car 2715 was one of the earlier cars in SEPTA's General OverHaul program and was rebuilt in late 1979. In the early 1990's SEPTA bought new streetcars; the 2700's were retired and 2715 was chosen to be rebuilt for SFMR's F-Market Line heritage streetcar operation. It was rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen and painted to grey, white and blue resemble a Public Service of New Jersey PCC. It went into service as SFMR 1060 on the F-Line on September 1, 1995 and was in regular operation until heavily damaged in an accident in November 2002. Rebuilt by SFMR's shops, this time the car was painted silver, cream and blue to resemble a Philadelphia Rapid Transit PCC. The car is still in everyday revenue service over half a century after it was built.
