San Francisco Municipal Railway 1057
One of a number of PCC streetcars still in active revenue service in the U.S. is this car, SFMR 1057. The acronym PCC refers to the Electric Railway Presidents Conference Committee, a group of street railway company representatives that in the early 1930's developed a design for a modern, standardized streetcar. The resulting PCC car was extremely successful and several thousand PCC's were built by two companies between 1936 and 1952. Philadelphia, the city for which 1057 was originally built, was one of the larger operators of PCC's and owned 570 at one time or another. This car was part of an order of 110 cars numbered 2091-2200 which made up Philadelphia's second and largest order for postwar PCC's. These cars were built as one-man cars and during their service lives saw service all over the steadily shrinking Philadelphia city system. Car 2138 was one of the earlier cars in SEPTA's General OverHaul program and was rebuilt in 1981. In the early 1990's SEPTA bought new streetcars; the 2100's were retired and 2138 was chosen to be rebuilt for SFMR's F-Market Line heritage streetcar operation. It was rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen and painted yellow and green to resemble a Cincinnati Street Railway PCC. It went into service as SFMR 1057 on the F-Line on September 1, 1995 and is still in everyday revenue service over half a century after it was built.
