Car History by Frank Hicks

Tahoe Valley Lines PCC Railway 102435
This unique piece of equipment was originally constructed as two different PCC streetcars. The acronym PCC refers to the Electric Railway Presidents Conference Committee, a group of street railway company representatives that in the early 1930's developed a design for a modern, standardized streetcar. The resulting PCC car was extremely successful and several thousand PCC's were built by two companies between 1936 and 1951. The very last order of PCC's built for for service in the United States were the SFMR 1016-1040 series, known locally as "Baby Tens." These cars operated in San Francisco for thirty years, until retirement in the early 1980's. Many of them were held afterwards in storage by SFMR. Two of the cars thus stored, 1024 and 1035, were sold to TVL's owner in 1994. Due to the cars' poor condition - 1024 had been damaged by fire and 1035 had significant rust damage - and due to space constraints in the TVL storage lot, the decision was made to combine the two single-ended PCC's into a single double-ended car. Engineering work was completed by volunteers and actual structural work was conducted by convicts at the Carson City Prison in 1995-1997. Structural work was completed but wiring and control systems were not restored. The incomplete car has been held in storage by TVL since major reconstruction was completed in 1997.
